Webpacker Lite: Why Did We Fork Webpacker?

Why is React on Rails version 8.x using Webpacker Lite, a fork of the “official” Webpacker gem? In a nutshell, the Webpacker gem configures the Webpack module bundler via “convention over configuration”, via the generated files and the setup of the configuration files. React on Rails, on the other hand, is intentionally designed to have minimal requirements for an app’s JavaScript and Webpack setup. While React on Rails provides a generator that gives a simple, default, Webpack setup, it’s just a starting point.
